Annually we lose about 60 000 cattle to stock theft, costing the country about R630 million. The count for poaching is right up there.
About 82 000 sheep and 35 000 goats are stolen annually costing the country another R200 million, according to the National Stock Theft Forum.
These figures are conservative and does not include offspring. The real figure is probably milliards of Rands.
With stats like these, it is no wonder that farmers are at wits end. Thieves are caught and are out within a couple of days.
